- Practise your basic facts: add/sub 1-10, 11-20

Spelling Strategies Checklist

2. LOOK SAY COVER; look at the word, say the word, cover the word, try to spell the word
3. SING and SPELL the word w-a-y is way (in a singing voice)
4. Look for words within the word the word ‘or’ is in the word or.
5. Say the word the way it is spelt. friend is; fry – end, island is; is - land
6. Look for the funny, tricky, unusual, difficult, silent parts
7. Break the word into syllables
8. Use phonics: use consonant blends, end blends, short & long vowel sounds, alternate vowel sounds, magic e.
9. Break into sounds
10. Use prefixes and suffixes (im, un meaning not or the opposite), ed meaning in the past, ing meaning now. (ment is the suffix added to make the root word a noun). Re means to do again
11. Use morphology: The meanings of words
(bi = 2, tri = 3, quad = 4) cycle = events regularly repeated.
12. Understanding compound words. 2 separate words put together to make a new word
- Write out the words ten times, saying each letter as you write it saying the word each time,

10. Use prefixes and suffixes (im, un meaning not or the opposite), ed meaning in the past, ing meaning now. (ment is the suffix added to make the root word a noun). Re means to do again
